I know I know I was radio silent for a while. Did you miss me? I bet you did.
There's been a lot going on lately so I haven't had time to do my (cough cough) favourite thing in the world (cough cough) and work on my website.
Arson and I have been living with a friend these past couple months. Which friend? Not telling! I tell you, humans are so fucking nosy.
But hey, I might as well turn my current situation into blog posts, right?
200 years ago, I had a private journal. Today, I have a public website. Both serve the same purpose but this one is much more fun because I get to complain to an audience of dozens and my wrist doesn't cramp up so much when I get long winded.
If a group of geese is called a gaggle and a group of crows is called a murder, what then is a group of vampires called?
Do Vampires often live in groups or are we more solitary creatures?
How do you get along with people who you have to live with for eternity?
Vampires do often live in groups. There are a few very famous examples of vampires who live alone or alone amongst human servants but those vampires are A) Very old, B) Very powerful, C) Very sad, or D) All of the above. Those of us who are well-adjusted (or relatively so) regular jack-offs often live in proximity to other vampires. Whether that proximity is like a roommate situation or more of a community one depends on time period and location but nowadays it is fairly common for vampires to be neighbors or co-habitors. So if there's a dilapidated house in your neighborhood that looks like it might be inhabited by vampires but none of the other houses around it look the same you are likely just dealing with a human with a dilapidated house. Just so you know.
The first is often referred to by humans as a "coven" but most vampires would not use that terminology for themselves. This group is populated by one maker and a whole bunch of vampires turned exclusively by them. These groups are often close-knit and share a single dwelling. They are often wary of outsiders and do not get along with other groups of vampires. The Cullen Family are kind of an example of this type of structure, as well as the Lost Boys. The number of this type of group may vary but often it is anywhere between 3-10 vampires. If this feels creepy and off-putting to you then you wouldn't necessarily be wrong. Some of these vampire "families" can border into cult territory and a lot of the time not all of the embraced vampires are willing. But you have to remember, vampires are creepy and off-putting creatures. We are literally walking dead.
The second type of vampire grouping is often referred to by humans and vampires alike as a 'nest' or a 'clan.' More rarely it is referred to as a 'pack' and sometimes this kind can also be referred to as a 'coven.' This is a grouping of vampires from diverse backgrounds who came together after being turned. They usually have no connections through their makers and are typically varying ages and experience levels. These groupings can live in a single dwelling or be spread throughout a community. If they live together often their numbers are limited from 4-6 and if they live spread out there can be as few as 3 or as many as dozens. These groups often come together for a safety-in-numbers kind of deal, as well as food security. It's easier to hunt in cooperation than it is to soldier it out alone. It is also easier to protect oneself from hunters in a group. While this kind of group is often close-knit it is also not often that they stay together forever. More often these groups have finite lifespans of years, decades, or centuries before the vampires part ways. It is really really hard to get along with people in close proximity indefinitely. Eventually, you are going to piss each other off.
I'll let you guess what kind of group I'm in right now.
